What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search engine optimization, commonly referred to as SEO, is the process of optimizing your website to get organic traffic from search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc). By making small changes to your website’s appearance and content, you can make it more attractive to search engines, which causes your site to gain higher placement in search results. SEO also means that search engines are delivering results that are high quality and relevant to what searchers are looking for.
By improving your SEO, you will expand your visibility online, which will help you to reach and engage with a wider audience! You can learn more about search engine optimization here.
Showcases
Vimeo Business and Premium members have the ability to utilize our SEO tool to help their Showcases get ranked higher by search engines and therefore more likely to be discovered by new viewers online. Without SEO, the only way for new viewers to find your videos is via a direct link. So you’ll be able to find a wider audience for your public showcases if you opt into allowing Google to index your Showcases.
If you are a Basic, Plus, or Pro level member, you’ll be able to preview this tool when working on your Showcase. However, you’ll need to upgrade to at least the Business-level to use it.
Getting Started
You can access this feature by going to one of your Showcases and looking at the left hand side panel. You’ll find the SEO tab under the General heading below the Info & Privacy and Assets tabs. You can also opt your Showcase in or out of being indexed by search engines on the Info & Privacy tab below the privacy field.
Navigate to the SEO tab to start customizing your Showcase site’s metadata. You can personalize how your Showcase will appear in a Google search by adding a new title and brief description of your collection. You’ll be able to preview your live changes in the preview window to the far right.
If you decide not to customize your Showcase’s title or description, Google will show the default title and description, those set on the Info & Privacy tab, for your Showcase. Your thumbnail will default to the image added to your Assets tab.
Be sure to also add some keywords describing the content of your collection. Google uses that information to determine which content is relevant to a particular search query, and how the page should rank in searches for a particular term. Essentially, that’s what gives a web page its search ranking.
Finally, you can preview how your site will appear in Google searches on desktop, mobile web, and tablets using the drop down menu above the preview window to the right.
Showcase Privacy Settings
Search engine optimization is only available for Showcases with the privacy setting “Anyone”, i.e., public showcases. This is because Google cannot index private or hidden Showcases. Any private videos that you’ve added to your public showcase, including Stock clips, will only be viewable by you, the account holder. Additionally, users currently in Private Mode will not be able to utilize this feature.
