In this article you'll find a breakdown of the privacy settings available for your videos. You can enable these settings on a per-video basis from your video's settings, or as a bulk task from the video manager. You can also set up upload defaults that will let you apply your desired settings to all current or future uploads.
Please note that if you make any changes to a video's privacy in an app (such as the Mevo app, Final Cut, iMovie, or the Vimeo app itself) that allows you to upload to Vimeo from a source other than Vimeo.com, any upload default settings you've set for your videos will be overridden. Any setting that is changed in an external app will take precedence over the upload defaults in the user's account settings.
Enabling domain-level privacy
With domain-level privacy, you can specify which websites are permitted to embed your video. Any sites that are not on your list will receive an error message when they attempt to embed it.
To set up domain-level privacy, head to your Video Manager, select the video, then click the Privacy button on the right side of the player. From there, click over to the General tab, Privacy section. In the dropdown menu under the question “Where can this video be embedded?”, select “Specific domains,” then add the domain names for the sites where you'd like your video to be embedded and click the (+) icon to add the domain.
- Main domain: mycoolsite.com
- Subdomains: subdomain.mycoolsite.com
Basic members will need to upgrade to Vimeo Plus or higher to unlock domain-level privacy.
Updating your video's privacy settings
To change the privacy settings of your video, select your video in the Video Manager and click the Privacy button to the right of the video player. Under the Link section in the panel, make your desired changes; you can then close out of the panel.
To change the privacy settings of all your existing videos and set preferences for future uploads, go to the Upload defaults tab under the Video tab in your Account Settings.
- If you want your new upload defaults to only apply to future uploads, simply hit the blue "Save" button after making your changes.
- If you want your new upload defaults to apply to all your videos, make sure to check the box next to "Also apply to existing videos" before hitting the blue “Save” button.
Removing the ability to download your videos
If you don't want your video to be downloaded by others, head to your Video Settings page, then click the Privacy tab. From there, toggle off the Allow downloads option.
To remove the ability to download your videos from all your existing videos and/or future uploads, go to the Upload defaults tab under the Video tab in your Account Settings. Under the heading "What can people do with your videos?" uncheck the box "Download them."
- If you only want to remove the ability to download your videos from future uploads, simply hit the blue "Save" button.
- If you want to remove the ability to download your videos from all your videos, make sure to check the box next to "Also apply to existing videos" before hitting the blue “Save” button.
Please note: As the owner of the video, you will always see the download button on your video page.
